Ensure the company you choose has strong visitor usability and user-friendly interaction knowledge. Usability is how visitors will interact with your website and how effectively they reach your end goal.Development Team - The company you choose should have an in-house development team. Don't use a company that is going to send your project work off to another country or other out-sourced web companies. You don't want to be chasing an invisible rabbit down a hole should things be affected by an unforeseen event.Design Team - Your web company ideally should have an in-house design team, unless you are dealing with another individual or company for design. What Does a Web Developer Do?

Web development is a craft that includes many different technologies. However, at the core of it all the responsibility of the web developer is to ensure that the client gets a website that does exactly what he wants it to do. There is a huge difference between being a web developer and a web designer, although their roles do have some overlap, the web designer will rarely be involved with any of the actual code that makes up the web site.

1. Plan The Design And Functionality Of The Website

It usually takes a while before the web developer actually starts to write the code that makes up the web site. When you get the contract for a web project there is a lot of planning and analysis that needs to take place. Usually the customer requires the website to function in a certain way. It is up to the project manager and his development team to estimate how long this will take.

During this stage the web designer will most likely participate to make sure that his design works with the customers requirements. Indeed, the requirements will most likely include details about how the customer wants the web site to appear.

2. Create The Business Logic As Specified By The Customer

When the planning and analysis stage has been completed the web developer will start developing the website. This often includes working with both client side technologies such as HTML, Java Script and CSS and server side technologies such as PHP and.NET.

A good web developer needs to be proficient with many technologies. There is no such thing as a pure HTML developer!

Knowing which tools to use for each part of the web site is instrumental to the success of the project.

3. Implementing The Web Design

You might think that when the web developer is done developing the web site the web designer would start implementing the web site. Even though they often work together it is usually the web developer who is tasked with implementing the web design on the web site.

It is critical that the web designer and the web developer work together on this!

4. Testing, Testing, Testing

Testing is arguably the most important, and most often neglected, part of a web development project. If there are critical errors on the website when it is launched the customer is at risk of losing a lot of money and certainly a lot of credibility.

Having said that the web developer should not be responsible for testing the web site. It is critically important that it is tested by someone who has not been involved in the actual development of the web site.

Would you believe - These 4 stages often takes place at the same time. Iterative development has become increasingly popular, meaning that parts of the website will most likely be tested while other parts of the site is still in development.

Modern web development include many different tasks, but it all starts with the fundamentals.

Is Your Web Designer Ripping You Off?

Nobody likes being ripped off - especially if they're in business.

Yet most businesses are paying hundreds or thousands of dollars to their web designer for shoddy, substandard work. Are you?

Luckily, there's a quick and easy way to find out.

Go to:http://validator.w3.org, type in your website address and click on the "Check" button.

If the page you see says "failed validation" in red writing, you might need to speak to your web designer - especially if there are more than a handful of errors.

Is your web designer one of the cowboys?

Unless you own a cattle ranch, you probably don't want to employ cowboys. You certainly wouldn't put up with substandard work from a builder or electrician, would you? What about an accountant that didn't understand tax laws, would you want them handing your finances?

Well, most web designers produce websites that are shoddy and substandard - and worst of all they don't even know it.

How can I tell if my site isn't up to standard?

Many professions and industries have standards. With some professions, like medicine or law, you need a qualification before you even start doing it. Other industries, like food processing or construction, aren't so strict about academic qualifications, but they do have standards that have to be met - like health and safety or food hygiene standards.

There's no academic qualification you need in order to become a web designer. All you need is a computer with internet access and the confidence (or in some cases arrogance) to call yourself a web designer.

However, although many people (and most web designers) don't know it - there are standards for websites.

What's more - it's really easy to test your website to see if it's up to standard. All you need to do is visit a website (http://validator.w3.org/) and you can test your site.

What are Web Standards?

Websites are programmed using a computer language called HTML. There's a right way to program HTML and there's a wrong way. The right way to program HTML is called "Web Standards," anything else is the wrong way.

The difference between the right and wrong way to program a website is technical - so if you're a business owner you don't need to understand the details.

However, you do need to understand that if your web designer hasn't used Web Standards it means:
Your site will do worse in Search Engines - so you'll get less visitors
It will take longer to download - so you'll lose more of the visitors you do get
It could cost you more to maintain the website
It's harder (and more expensive) to make changes to the website
Up to 40% of people might not be able to see your website properly because they use different type of computer or web browser than your web designer.
Your site is probably not going to be accessible to people with disabilities - which could mean you could fall foul of your local disability discrimination laws

Of course, you might not have all these problems if your web designer hasn't used Web Standards - but you'll certainly have some of them.

If my site fails to validate does that mean it doesn't use Web Standards?

Not necessarily.

The W3C validator (http://validator.w3.org/) is a useful tool for checking if your site uses high-quality HTML. However, it's not a 100% guarantee.

It's possible for a site to fail the validation on one or two minor points. If this is the case it's not a major problem, although you could ask your web designer to correct them.

However, if your site has dozens of hundreds of errors this is bad news.

It's also possible to for your website to pass the validator and still use out-of-date techniques, however this is much less likely.

Should web designers use Web Standards?

Yes.

To put it bluntly, if you don't know web standards, you're really not entitled to call yourself a "professional" web designer.

There are some occasions when it's acceptable to use non Web Standards techniques for practical reasons, but it has to be an informed decision.

How many web designers program websites the wrong way?

Unfortunately, most web designers program websites the wrong way. The sad thing is that many of them don't even know about Web Standards.

There are plenty of web designers that do use Web Standards, but they're in a minority.

Because there are no entry barriers to web design, anybody can set up as a web designer. That means there's plenty of choice but it also means there are plenty of cowboys producing badly-programmed websites.

What do I do if my website hasn't been created using Web Standards?

Well, you've got a couple of choices.

Firstly, you could contact the web designer that created your site and ask them why they didn't produce your site with Web Standards.

If your site is more than 1 or 2 years old it isn't reasonable to expect your site to have been created with Web Standards, as they weren't a well-known technique then.

You might find that your web designer now uses Web Standards and would be able to redesign your website so that it uses them.

They may be willing to do this for free, as a courtesy, or they may charge you for this.

Can't I just sue them?

I'm not a lawyer and couldn't offer legal advice.

However, I suspect that unless you have a written contract with your web designer specifying that the site should be built using Web Standards techniques you would find a legal route difficult.

What are my other options?

If your current web designer is unable or unwilling to change your site so that it uses Web Standards you could find another web designer who is able to redesign your site using Web Standards.

Use Google or Yellow Pages to find web designers in your local area and then contact them to see if they use web standards.

If they say yes, check some of their sites using http://validator.w3.org/.

What if I don't have a website yet?

If you don't have a website yet, or are planning a new one, make sure you choose a web designer that uses Web Standards to create their websites.

Resources

http://validator.w3.org/ - HTML Validator

Adhering to Web Standards to Improve Business

Taking web standards into account when designing a web site may not be a primary concern for many site owners, but when it comes to finding an extra edge to improve their business, they are more than willing to do anything required to increase revenues. Let's see how complying with Web standards can help a business web site.

What are the Web Standards?

On the Web, the main standards are the languages used when creating web sites. The most wide-spread ones are HTML, XHTML and CSS. HTML or XHTML are used to create the backbone of web sites - the structure. CSS, in turn, is used to style, format and position the structure and content.

What is Web Standards Compliance?

Put simply, web standards compliance is using web languages correctly. This involves using HTML tags properly and the way they were and are intended to be used. For instance, one of the most common mistakes against the web standards is using table tags for layout, while the correct usage is to use them only for tabular data (information to be put in tables).

Advantages of Web Standards Compliance

Creating quality, Web standards compliant code has a number of benefits:

o Web site forward compatibility

o Web site increased site download speed

o Web site browser compatibility

o Web site easier site maintenance

o Web site broader target audience

Olive eBusiness in New Delhi, India has over a decade experience in web site design and development. Raising Your Web Design Standards According To Web Standards

While designing a website, it is important to follow appropriate standards. Incorporating web design standards in your website will give you many advantages for your online business.

Standards improve the overall quality and effectiveness of the website. Your website's quality depends upon adherence to standards. Web standards takes into account many factors like design quality, accessibility and usability of web sites.

Advantages of incorporating web standards in your web design are:

1) Browser Compatibility:

Every user will use a different browser or hardware platform to browse internet. If your website is designed by keeping in mind all the web standards and best practices, your website is definitely going to work perfectly on all the browsers and platforms. This will be helpful from the perspective of branding and usability.

2) It ensures your website is accessible to a larger audience:

Incorporating standards on your website enhances the accessibility of your website. It makes sure that both newer and older versions of browsers are compatible with your website in terms of understanding and displaying content. Compliant documents are also shared conveniently on the web and are converted to different forms if it is supposed to be shared.

3) Stability:

Standards make it very easy for a web designer or a developer to interpret the code which could have been developed by someone else. This will help in carrying out modifications or changes in the design if needed in the future. If a website is designed by incorporating all the web standards than another designer can easily interpret and edit the code.

4) Better compatibility with devices:

A website can be viewed in the present day with a variety of methods. Constructing a website by keeping in mind the compatibility factor has become a necessity as a website can be viewed by a range of devices. These days internet is accesses on desktops, laptops, mobile phones, tablets, palmtops etc. A website that obeys the terms of standards can be accessed conveniently on all these platforms and devices.

5) Better Quality of code:

Adhering to W3C web standards will ensure quality of programming and design. This way your website will be made free from bugs and errors so that it doesn't harm the working of the website. Using HTML is best option as it loads quickly in browsers. Submissive websites makes use of clean CSS based designs to generate quality code.

6) Better visibility on search engines:

Complying with web standards is a very useful method in improving the search engine ranking of your website. It will help your website to increase its ranking on the keywords that you target for your website. Using proper tags and overall mark up for every web page helps search engine bots to crawl on your website and give it a proper ranking.

Web Development Lifecycle (WDL)

The web development lifecycle (WDL) is a more specific variation on the general framework for developing any application development project. Unlike general application development, all web design and development projects follow a similar structure, so the web development lifecycle / process can be drawn upon as a point of reference for both the web development team and the client to determine the status of any given project and the area of activity to address next.

The Web Development Lifecycle is made up of eight identifiable stages described as follows:

1. Initial Consultation

The Initial Consultation seeks to understand the high level business requirements, the scale of the web development, required delivery schedule, and the overall feasibility, web design and cost of the project.

2. Project Specification

The business requirements of the proposed website are iteratively established between the Client and the web design team, and documented in the form of a High Level Requirements Specification. Focus here is on the relevant business rules and outputs. Implementation of the system, how the requirements are actually delivered, is reserved for later. Once agreed, this document will form the basis of the subsequent stages of the Web Development Lifecycle.

3. Web Site Architecture

Here the software and hardware requirements for delivery of the web application are established, such as the most appropriate web and application development language, operating system, database management system (DBMS), and hardware / hosting environment that are most appropriate to support the final website in a robust and reliable manner; taking account of the likely growth of data volumes, visitor numbers web traffic, and functionality.

4. Web Site Design Cycle

Deliverables out of this phase have a particular focus on the web design of the system, include mock-ups or prototypes of the screens that make up the system, combined with system walkthroughs which will enable both the Client and the software developers, designers and project management team to clearly understand how the website will work from the user and administrators perspective. The design of the CRM would also be full considered here also. This web application functionality is considered in the context of the defined outputs and business rules, and may result in the High Level Requirement Specification being updated or changed. Following this, a key deliverable here is a Low Level Website Design Specification / Document precisely defining the required implementation of the web design and forming a blue print of the project for the software developers.

5. Content Collation

Any required textual and graphical content for the web application is developed or acquired by the Client (or the software development company, depending on the relevant situation). Admin functionality which enables the Client to amend the full content of the site from system launch, and on an ongoing basis, is assumed to have been included and defined within the High Level Requirements Specification, as mentioned.

6. Web Site Project development

At this stage a detailed project plan will have been established for the implementation of the web design, resources identified, time scales defined, and project dependencies clearly understood - especially with respect to which parts of the web development can be done in serial or parallel. This stage actually overlaps with the next stage of the Web Development Lifecycle since all web developed modules are unit tested to destruction by the corresponding web development team members. Further, it is very important that all code produced by the software developers is quality checked to ensure adherence to project development standards.

7. Testing & Quality Assurance

Many forms of testing are carried out during this phase, from system and volume testing - in order to ensure that all components work together within the web application and can easily cope with both the initial and anticipated future demands on the system - all the way to User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and sign-off. There are many forms of testing required during this phase that are beyond the scope of this introduction, such as cross-browser and security testing - all contributing towards the delivery of a high-quality website and service to the client.

8. Web Site Deployment (Launch)

Once the website implementation is tested and released by both the client and software development company as being fully operational, the website is deployed to the production environment and open to the relevant user base. Following this there is generally a pre-agreed period of warranty and an ongoing support agreement can be established at the discretion of the client.

The process can vary but, generally speaking, the dependencies and features of a successful process of delivering webs applications to the client does not. I hope this has been a useful introduction to the process of delivering quality web applications to any business.

The company primarily serves wider-Europe, the Middle-East and Mediterranean regions - but also has clients in many other parts of the world. The company was originally incorporated in the UK in 1998 as Radiant Systems Ltd, which operated as an IT consultancy boutique directly serving FT100 companies throughout the United Kingdom. From around 2003 there was a significant growth in the demand for IT services within small and medium sized companies who were realising the opportunity that the web presented to their business, as well as the cost savings that could be achieved through automation and streamlining of their operations.

The SME market for IT services continues to grow to this very day. However, it is true to say that the quality of service being offered by the IT industry to the SME varies widely, often with loose adherence to industry standards of design, development, documentation, support, and general customer care. Unfortunately, the industry continues to be sales, rather than service, orientated - and price, rather than value sensitive - causing many SMEs to fall foul of poorly qualified, inexperienced service providers.

In 2005 our reaction to this situation was to restructure our services as ETL Motion Ltd, with a focus on providing the same high standards of service and expertise to the SME as we would continue to offer to our large-company clients. Today our philosophy remains the same, to offer consistently high levels of service and delivery to all company clients however large or small. Beware of Freelance Web Developers and Designers - They Are Cheap, But Could Be More Expensive

Plenty of startup companies are seeking their web presence through a simple website or an interactive web portal. To accomplish the web development task they try to find the resources on internet. They search for resources using keywords like freelance web developer, freelance web development or freelance web designers. Either they end up seeing some blog of freelancer or they reach to the freelance heaven websites like rentacoder, getacoder, getafreelancer, elance or odesk. Such sites have millions of cheap freelancers registered with them. You may put a project and you can get as many as 50-100 bids for your project in a day. This sounds fascinating initially but it's just a beginning of process. The trouble starts now. Here are few difficulties you will face at initial stage.

1. You have overwhelming bids that makes the choice difficult for you.

2. Every one of them tells you that they are the best, but hardly few of them are actually telling the truth.

3. You may not find just one freelance web developer meets all your needs, Mr. A meets 50% matching requirements and Mr. B and Mr. C meets 25% each, that increases your troubles.

SO finally you selected someone with all your agreements on price and estimate, now you may see the second largest pool of difficulties

1. The communication is a major issue, the freelancer does not reply emails on time and neither do they remain online all the day because they have their full time jobs elsewhere (that jobs pay the full time income)

2. The freelancer is a lone person but the project of web development needs different skills like project requirement analysis, design the website mockup, HTML conversion, programming in PHP or.Net, quality test and delivery. Normally not one person does all. This invites problem #3

3. The freelancer either asks you to manage other resources for him or he goes and finds other freelancers to help him; that comes on higher price. So you waste lot of time while your selected freelance web designer is busy finding help for him.

4. As I said in point #1, most of the freelancers have their full time jobs, such jobs demand lot of time and energy, so freelance web designers or developers work on odd hours or they just do not work on some days when they are busy with their full time jobs. Such behavior causes further delay to your project delivery.

5. You may come across various excuses for not delivering of your projects, some common excuses are "I am not well since few days", some emotional excuses like "My mother/father/daughter/wife is not well so I am in hospital". Such excuses are emotional blackmailing techniques that can make you believe that the freelancer is in trouble while he is actually trying to buy some more time.

6. Most of the Freelance web developers are over loaded with work because of their cheap hourly rates. Such overloading can make you suffer the delay in your web development project. That increase more frustration.

7. The major problem you could come across is that the freelancer disappears after you paid him advance money for your project. Certain freelancers have many accounts created on odesk, elance, getacoder, rentacoder, getafreelancer kind of websites, so they would stop responding you and neither do they will return your initial money.

So your plan of saving money could end up losing money and time, losing time is more expensive than losing money.

How do you prevent this, here are simple reasons to select a small web development company compared to a freelance web developer.

1. The company has long term plan, so web development companies are professional.

2. Company has many resources for web design, web development, quality testing and deployment so your project never suffers a delay.

3. Company has a legal name, legal offices so web development companies can sign a contract with you, a freelancer never signs a contract or signing contract with freelancer has no meaning.

4. A web development company has many back resources so even if some developer or designer does not show up, the company can replace them with other developers, your work never suffer.

5. A web development company takes money on milestones, so your money and project both are secure.

6. Most important point is communication. You can get a good communicating people in web development companies because the manager is always a well experienced person; he takes all responsibilities of problems and payments.

Above all its peace of mind when you work with web development companies, it comes at little extra cost but with lot of amenities as described above.

Choice is yours, select a freelance web designer and ruin your web development project or select a web development company and run a successful web based business.

Marketing, Web Standards and Accessibility Compliant Websites

Increasingly we are gaining a lot of new business through both startups and those well established firms that are seeking to revitilise their business. This in itself is an exciting arena to work in as often you get a "clean" sheet to start on. This enables strong foundations to be built that enable any future marketing plans to be highly successful.

However there is one key area of the plan that always seems to come to disagreement and potential issues arise. That is the area of the website, Coasis insist that all websites are designed using XHTML Strict and CSS (all tableless designs except where tabular data is required to be displayed). This ensures maximum compatibility on all operating systems and browsers, maximises search engine listings and lays the basis for any user with disabilities not to be discriminated against while wanting to browse your website content.

This approach for the majority of our clients does not pose a problem, they embrace the design methodology and appreciate the rewards it will later bring. They also realise that they have a moral duty to represent their company or self by adhering to government legislation for Accessibility compliance, something that Coasis have been incorporating in client sites for a number of years now.

The other side is those that have had websites for a long period of time or have at some stage in their careers been involved in websites, though not always on the technical design side. It is these clients that have a total lack of understanding as to why it is important when conducting a marketing campaign that the website has to be an efficient conduit that reinforces the marketing message. To often sales leads are lost from a successful campaign by the fact the website does not deliver.

We are trying to educate and help lead through this barrier all companies we now not only work with but also speak to. We at Coasis are more than happy to field questions over this subject matter that we feel is at the forefront of current strategic marketing.

Web Standards, Browsers And Designing For the Future

Nowadays most of the webmasters are being designed for Internet Explorer 6. This is not totally W3C standards compliant as for Firefox, Safari, Opera and Netscape. Now the designer should realize that if the websites are made with this type then a website that looks perfect in intent explorer version is not going to have the same look in Mozilla browsers like Netscape and Firefox. This is the main factor that is being considered for long time now. Similarly, the devices that serve internet application falling in line with the W3C standards have turned out to be serious.

Microsoft has taken lot of efforts to fix the browsers compliance to W3C standards and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) compatibility. The CSS interpretation has become popular in quick time due to its power of cross browser design. Most of the web designers and developers are working on with the CSS interpretation to make sure that the websites have the same look and features on all the browsers. This is the one of the reason to why Microsoft had taken the W3C compatibility seriously.

Therefore, it is important for the web designers and web developers to check the pages designed in W3C standards browsers such as Netscape, Firefox and Opera. The case is different with the latest versions of internet explorer and Google browsers. This makes it clear for the web developers and designers to start creating web designs and web sites that are W3C standard compatibility.

We know that the primary competitor for internet versions of browsers is Firefox especially due to the reason it is a standard compliant browser. It is the same for Netscape and Google browsers. It is having these points in mind the latest web sites ad web designs are created. It is sure that every web site owner will want his website to look perfect as it is, when opened on any browsers.

Search Engine Optimization and Web Standards

Most Webmasters have never consider web standards when optimizing their websites for the search engines. To date, it is true that the most search engines are forgiving. However, no one can guarantee that the search engines will continue to overlook crappy codes. Having a well-formed and validated website will not only help the bots in indexing but also reduce the chances of errors when loading in the users' browsers.

Designing a new website in Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) has always been recommended by the WorldWide Web Consortium (W3C). Not only does CSS generate lesser codes when compared to the conventional table designs but it also allows the users to download a page much faster.

Having less codes is encouraged in Search Engine Optimization context as it enables the bots to index a page faster and safer. Safer in the sense that the lesser the codes we have, the lower the chances that the page will generate errors. As we never know what will the bots react when an error is encountered in a page, so it is highly encouraged to keep the codes clean and compact, most importantly, valid.

As the search engine bots favors simple and content rich website, having a clean site with fast downloading time is highly recommended. Most websites have made a mistake by creating massive and flashing sites that takes forever to download. This is pretty bad as the bots may ignore the rest of the content when it times out.

Another advantage of having a valid website is the portability. With the usage of CSS, a website can be viewed in various media platforms such as cell phones or other mobile devices. We wold not want to optimize a site that can only be viewed on a computer screen.

CSS also enable the designers to have precise control over the page's design. Many new features are simply impossible to be implemented using the conventional table designs such as the line-height property. In addition, it allows the designers to change the appearance of certain elements by only changing the CSS file. This in turns, save us more time to carry out other search engine optimization tasks for the website.

To conclude, having a website that has been validated is highly recommended in a long run. Well-formed websites will also generate properly in the user's browsers. Most importantly, the search engine bots will have an easier time indexing the page.

The Continuing Development of CSS as a Web Standard

Cascading style sheets were formally introduced by the W3C in 1997 and in the nine years since have made gradual progress to becoming a web standard. Although the W3C mandates style sheets instead of HTML formatting for internal styles, many web designers have been slow to adopt CSS.

Graphic designers, especially, have been slow to accept CSS since it does not allow the complex designs made possible by the use of nested tables without concentrated testing and workarounds. That is because CSS is not universally cross-browser compatible. The first release of CSS in 1997 was notorious for breaking on a variety of browsers. The second, and current, release provides more stability but still causes unexpected results on older browsers.

In light of the cross-browser difficulties of CSS. many designers have adopted a hybrid standard, using CSS for styling text but continuing to use nested tables to structure their pages. This provides a measure of stability and control to a web designer who does not have the time or inclination to learn advanced CSS. However, this practice is severely frowned on by both the W3C and by a small but influential group of CSS designers who claim that the use of nested tables slows down page loading and that CSS can, with proper application, create complex designs just as well as nested tables.

However, many freelance web designers have found that their clients are unwilling to accept the additional cost and time to create a completely CSS-based design. This attitude is beginning to change at the corporate level, however, as more and more sites are redesigned using pure CSS.

The continuing acceptance of CSS as a web standard has also been hampered by the popularity of Macromedia Flash as a design tool. Completely vector-based and imported into a web page by the use of a plug-in, Flash offers enormous flexibility in creating complex navigation systems, a historically weak point of CSS. Flash also allows a higher level of artistic expression than the more limited CSS, which is primarily designed to deliver information. This has created a divide in the web design community to the point where there are basically two camps of web designers, those who use Flash and those who don't. The debate over the merits of CSS versus Flash has been known to get quite heated on occasion.

Many have predicted that the third release of CSS will solve many of the problems hampering widespread acceptance of CSS as a web standard. However, the third release has been in development since 1998 and is not expected to be completed anytime soon.

Why Web Standards Are Important

Standards on the internet refer to the guidelines and specifications that govern site design and building. This affects the tools and software used when creating a website. Tools and software for web design are a huge industry, which make standards important, but on top of that you have the user experience, which is what should be the main concern.

Having a set of standards, universal to all websites, ensures that no matter what a site is being viewed on, or which browser it is being viewed with, it will look the same. Universal standards mean that browsers can be built knowing what to expect from websites. This not only means that all current websites work on all browsers, but websites built in the future will as well, as long as the standards are maintained.

It sounds relatively simple, but, during the 90's, Internet Explorer and Netscape both began ignoring web standards, instead seeking to add features that would give them an edge over each other.

The results were pages that would only display correctly in one browser, developers having to develop multiple pages for different browsers, some websites only being displayed correctly on a specific version of a browser, and an increase in bugs and security holes as development of features took time away from quality control.

It also led to a louder call for standardisation, and once Internet Explorer had emerged as dominant, W3C standards such as XML and CSS became more strictly adhered to.

The benefits of this were that developers knew what they were designing for, users didn't have to worry about which browsers they were using, and more time could be spent on addressing bugs and security holes.

When the second browser wars began, browsers were already adhering to these standards, and so the competition become which browser could provide the best user experience. This led to features such as tabbed browsing, enhanced Java reading and more options for customisation.

Hopefully, these standards will be maintained in the future, and new technologies or developments will be brought in in a manner that works with web standards.

Centralized Web Presence: Redesign With Web Standards in Mind

Web Professionals and Site Owners are becoming increasingly concerned with the structure and overall quality of their sites. Therefore, many have adopted web standards set forth by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), a body that develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential. In doing so, an organization takes a positive step towards making their content more accessible to greater number of users, while simplifying and lowering the cost of production.

Bandwidth and Accessibility.

Utilizing web standards can significantly lower the amount of bandwidth needed for a user to view a page. Internet bandwidth is, in simple terms, the transmission speed or throughput of your connection to the Internet. For example, if user A downloads a page at 10 Kb and user B downloads a page at 900 Kb, user B utilizes more bandwidth. Therefore, depending upon the technical capabilities or factors influenced by the digital divide, a page might be inaccessible to individuals with less bandwidth.

CSS Stylesheets and Accessibility.

Utilizing css stylesheets has many advantages.
Site wide changes become easier to make.
Faster downloads - css stylesheets utilize less code.
Browser Compatibility - code designed to provide visual continuity between the various browsers.
Pages are made accessible for different mediums such as mobile devices, the internet, printers, etc.
Validating Syntax and Usability.
Web Professionals and Site Owners should validate there code for usability and accessibility purposes. The validation process ensures that html and css syntax is correct throughout the various browser platforms and accessible to all users. Invalid code could lead to a page failing to properly display or even worse, inaccessible to a disable person.

Although web standards cannot fix all online marketing needs, it can certainly ensure that a page is accessible to a greater number of web users. Therefore, as the web continues to evolve, there will be an increased emphasis placed on web and accessibility standards.

For more information, visit otbinteractive.com

OTB Interactive is a professional web design and online marketing company based in Houston, Texas. Designing With Web Standards - What Are They and How Can They Save Me Money With My Web Site?

The browser wars are over and with them the need to develop specific code for specific browsers. All the major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari) are now cooperating so that the same piece of code in a web site will look the same in multiple browsers, as well as looking consistent in other browsing devices such as microbrowsers and TVs.

What Are Web Standards?

Designing with web standards is a general term used to mean that you use the following technologies, and that you use them correctly:
HTML or XHTML to contain the content,
CSS to hold all the styling,
JavaScript and the Document Object Model (DOM) to take care of any scripting.

In the bad old days, HTML was used incorrectly. Objects like tables are meant to be used to hold tabular data but instead they were (ab)used to hold background images and other components just to artificially create a layout on a web page. Style information was mixed in along with the content making the code bloated and inefficient.

The web standards project seeks to:
persuade browser makers to support the standards, as they were intended and
persuade web professionals to use them that way.

Why Should I Care?

There are numerous, tangible benefits to designing with web standards, not least of all, financial savings.

Lower Costs

Separating the content from the styling makes your site easier to update and maintain. This makes it less expensive for the developers as less time is needed to add new content, update existing content and test. Also, your site will be future-proofed. All compliant browsers will always support your code, you do not need to have the developers retest every time a new browser releases a new version just to make sure that the pages still look the same.

If your site is large then separation will also mean a substantial savings on the bandwidth, which in turn translates into lower hosting costs.

Increased Findability, Improved SEO

If your site uses meaningful (X)HTML then your site's content is easier for search engines and therefore customers to find. Some search engines score pages on how well-structured the markup is, your Alexa ranking is affected and other SEO metrics are also improved. For example, when you separate the site's content from the styling, your site gets lighter because there is less code. Essentials of Web Design and Web Development

The initial concentration on web design and web development is to have a plan and knowing the purpose of a task. A web developer must learn the purpose of web development as well as the web design. First, the developer must analyze the audience which essential in a lot of technical communication works. Planning and analysis necessitates for the developer to know who will be the users on the internet and what they will acquire from viewing the web design on the website.

A great strategy in order to produce audience information is by creating an information list on what the background, concerns and traits on an audience. These details may not always be integrated, though web developers can develop and sustain a collection of information that they may innovate eventually.

Initially, a developer doesn't require to have wide variety of audience but may just center on a few number which will be associated to the purpose of the web development. For instance that you are developing a web design intended for selling computer parts, your viewers might be the probable, current as well as the previous buyers of the computer parts. You may gain various viewers for your websites. Aside from the computer parts purchasers, you can also reach some business stockholders, suppliers, as well as employees. Another essential method is to develop a diagram which presents the extent of viewers that your website will reach.

The next thing to do is to provide a list of particular objectives, goals that is needed to be accomplished. After developing a collection of objectives, the next task is to accumulate domain information that will back up these objectives. Domain information is a set of information and knowledge pertaining to the subject domain that the web binds. This involves the details which the web users may meet and the information that the web developers may require for the web design or the things to employ on the internet.

The web design must take into consideration the purpose of the web and the viewers. A great web developer is aware of how to obtain the effects that is needed in the most adaptable, effective and luxurious method. Web design must have a deep understanding of hypertext, Java, multimedia as well as other programming needed and skills on certain web structures that may reach the viewers.

Once the developers are finished with web design, he must implement it within the boundaries of its technical structure that has been established on its specifications. The first implementation might be in a form of prototype that is not launched in the public but is present for further analysis and may be utilized by a group of representative audience.

A web developer makes HTML, CGI, Java scripts or applets. The implementation procedure correspond to software development due to the involvement of particular syntax for the creation of hypertext structures or when developing programming language code arguments on computer systems.

Once the website is ready to launch, you can make the public to be aware that it's going to be released. Maybe you may establish communication with other websites that has the same type of audience or has the equal purpose.

Web Development - Do It Yourself?

Can I Do My Own Website?

Many businesses or individuals in Windsor who want a website commonly ask the question: "Can I develop my own website?" The short answer to this question is yes, absolutely. In fact, developing a simple website is easier now than it ever has been. Programs such as Macromedia's Dreamweaver or Microsoft Front Page have made it easy to develop web pages with little to no skill. Simply pick a pre-made template, type in your text, add a couple of pictures and voila! You have yourself a website, right? Well, sort of.

The simple fact of the matter is, you can't expect to develop a professional looking, tightly coded, website just by plugging your text into a pre-made template with a code generation tool. Yes, software has greatly improved over the years with how it generates HTML, the markup code that defines the structure of your web pages, but generated code will always be bulkier, and less efficient than hand coded HTML pages.

Most professionals in Windsor develop their HTML pages by hand. In fact, most page developers rarely ever use anything but a text editor to generate their pages. Professional page developers will use HTML for what it was developed for, to describe the structure of a page, and encapsulate the content of said page via the markup tags relevant to the content at hand. What does all that mumbo jumbo mean? Well, simply put, it means that a professional web page developer is going to structure a page correctly, using the correct tags, not just using tags that look right when a page is rendered to the browser. A professional page developer never concerns himself with how the HTML makes a page look, HTML is there to structure a page, not describe how the style is defined. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) describes how the nicely structured pages should look when rendered to the browser. Moreover, the developer structures his/her pages so they render correctly in all browsers, a task that the code generators fail miserably at most times.

What's In Your Page Source?

Alright, I will be the first to admit that most people don't care how bulky their web pages are or how inefficient they are coded. Granted, most visitors are on high-speed internet and those extra 500 milliseconds your page takes to load isn't going to matter, right? Again, sort of. You always have to be aware of how long your pages are taking to load, and how responsive they are for your visitors. Studies have shown that an average user will wait about 10 seconds for a page to load before they navigate away out of frustration. I have a feeling that this study was done before the vast majority of users had high-speed internet. I suspect that tolerance to waiting is actually much lower.

Experienced web developers and web designers will always optimize their images, and HTML to load as quickly as possible. Images that are not properly compressed can easily be 5 times larger than a properly compressed image. Improperly compressed images can easily increase a web page load by 5-10 seconds!

Got Google?

One of the biggest detriments of doing your own web development is the lack of search engine optimization. One of the most common causes of websites having poor search engine rankings is because the page is full of HTML errors which throw off the search engine crawlers. Web pages that are not structured correctly, and have a lot of styling information inline with the content will never rank well compared to websites that are structured correctly with nice clean content.

So does this mean that if you do your own website, you won't ever get listed in the search engines? Of course not, but if a professional web designer or web developer programs your HTML pages, your pages are much more likely to get indexed correctly. Moreover, most web developers will put a link from their well indexed site to your new site, which will further help the crawlers find your site quicker. If your developer is experienced in search engine optimization (SEO), that will even further liken your chances to high rankings in the search engines.

How's It Going To Look?

Ok, so we have established that yes you can do your own website. It might be coded terribly, and not rank well in the search engines, but you are still determined to do it yourself. Quick question, how is the site actually going to look? If you are a good designer, and can make a nice picture of how you want your site to look, you can use your code generator to make it look the same right? Not quite.

Getting your website to look the same as what you had envisioned is a very tricky proposition for an inexperienced web designer. Developing for the web is very different from developing a page for traditional print. In traditional print, you have a fixed canvas (the page), whereas on the web, you have several variables to contend with. First, you have no idea what resolution your users will be viewing your web-pages at when developing your website. What looks good at 1024x768 might look terrible at 1280x1024 resolutions. To further complicate things, different browsers can show the exact same HTML much differently. Specifically, Internet Explorer based browsers use a different engine than Gecko based browsers (Mozilla, Firefox etc). It can be truly frustrating even for experienced developers to try and keep things looking the same across the board, but for a do-it-yourselfer it can be an impossible task.

Ok, let's say you've tackled all the compatibility issues. How will the website actually look when it's done? Will it look professional? Or, will it look like a do it yourself site? If your website is being used for business, what image do you waAnt to attach to your company?

Are You Scared Now?

It really isn't my intent to suggest that you shouldn't try to develop your own website. I still maintain that a lot of people can develop a fairly decent site themselves, especially if they have a basic understanding of HTML and a fairly good design sense. One good approach to doing it yourself is to have a web developer that you can consult with on some of the more technical issues. You can save a lot of money by doing it yourself and letting your developer check your work for any major issues with the web pages. Many web developers in Windsor will gladly check your pages over at an affordable hoAurly rate, correcting any major issues.

Having a developer to walk you through some of the more technical aspects of web developing can be a very sound approach if you want to do your own web programming. You really do have to weigh the hourly rate of checking the code against the cost of having the developer program everything.
